Emma Steel

After finishing 6th overall in the women's lightweight double scull at the 2007 U23 World Championships, this is Emma's second year at U23 level.

Emma was a member of the British team that travelled to the Olympic Youth Festival in Australia in January 2007, where she won two gold medals in the women's eight and the women's quadruple scull. She also picked up a silver medal in the women's lightweight double scull. In 2006 Emma raced in the women's lightweight double scull at the World University Rowing Championships, finishing 5th.

Emma is also a two-time Women's Henley Regatta winner: in 2006 she won women's senior quadruple sculls and in 2007 she won women's lightweight quadruple sculls.

Emma started rowing a Durham City Rowing Club after trying out an indoor rowing machine at primary school and soon began competing in the sport. Emma has a strong background in sports, having done county-level trials for netball and doing athletics while at school.

She has just completed her third year in Geography at Durham University and is considering studying a Masters in Environmental Management. After she finishes rowing, Emma would like to become a teacher and take up long distance running.

In her spare time Emma helps to coach rowing at Durham School.
