Steve Gunn

Steve made his GB senior international debut in 1992 in Barcelona where he coached the Searle brothers to a stunning gold medal at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. Steve had taught Greg and Jonny to row at Hampton School where he was the rowing master and he guided them as a pair through the 1991/2 winter following their bronze medal in the eight at the 1991 World Rowing Championships in Vienna.

The Searles memorably rowed through the Italian double Olympic Champion Abbignale brothers in the closing strokes of the Olympic final in 1992.

Steve continued to coach Greg and Jonny for the following Olympiad. They won gold again at the 1993 Worlds, but in 1994 they moved to the four and, with Rupert Obholzter and Tim Foster they won bronze in 1994, silver in 1995 and an Olympic bronze in 1996 in Atlanta.

In 1996 Steve left Hampton School to become High Performance Rowing Coach for the New Zealand Federation, a position he held until 2000. In 2002 Steve joined the ARA’s staff as men’s High Performance Coach and coached the GB eight from 2002 to 2006, which included a World Bronze medal in 2003. In 2007 Steve coached the men's quad.

Since December 2007, Steve has headed up the ARA's World Class Start Programme, sponsored by Siemens.  He leads a team of talent and performance development coaches whose aim is to identify and develop rowers to win Olympic medals.

Steve lives in East Molesey with his wife Pip and their two daughters.
