Five golds, three silvers and the world cup points trophy for GB
GB Rowing men's four buried some significant ghosts today on the Munich regatta course which witnessed them lose their world title eight months ago on a day when GB won five golds and three silvers - all bar one silver in Olympic classes - as well as the world cup points trophy.

Today it was a different story. The Camelot-backed quartet were machine-like in their march to the line to take gold with Tom Lucy in the bow seat racing Steve Williams, Peter Reed and Andy Hodge as a substitute for the recently selected but injured Tom James.

Two fours amongst six winners

GB Rowing's open and lightweight men's fours were both semi-final winners in style here in Munich today and were joined by four other winners - all Olympic class boats bar one.

The Camelot-sponsored open weight men's four were both cohesive and imperious and led virtually for the full 2000m. "We found unity", said strokeman Andy Hodge, "and set a good rhythm".

GB's world champion lightweight men's four, backed by Siemens, were equally dominant from the outset.

Quad, eight and some young crews are the focus

Great Britain's Camelot-sponsored women's quadruple scull became the first GB crew to qualify for an Olympic class final at the season's opening world cup in Munich when they won today's opening heat by a strong margin. They were swiftly followed by the Siemens-backed men's eight who shrugged off Australia to win their heat, too.

Elsewhere there were wins for the lightweight men's double in the quarter-finals and the lightweight men's pair in the heats - also putting the latter into a final, albeit non-Olympic.

Five Olympic class wins on a blustery Munich day

Five wins in Olympic boat class heats marked GB rowing's first competitive day at world cup level this season in testing headwind but sunny conditions in Munich.

Reigning world lightweight four champions Richard Chambers, Paul Mattick, James Lindsay-Fynn and James Clarke, sponsored by Siemens, were amongst the winners controlling their race from the outset to mark their return to the scene of last year's triumph.

GB set for biggest world cup yet

GB Rowing will this weekend participate in the biggest world cup regatta to date with over 800 rowers, in 370 boats from 54 nations due to take part in Munich from tomorrow (Thursday) to Sunday (11th).

GB's world champion women's quadruple scull will return to the water on which they won their third world championships title since 2005 last August. The Camelot-backed quartet of Katherine Grainger, Fran Houghton, Debbie Flood and Annie Vernon could find that Germany and China - the latter with two entries here - could be their main contenders.

Injury Hiccough for Men's Four

Tom James, who recently won a seat in the Camelot-backed GB men's four for the season's opening world cup, due to take place from Thursday to Sunday (8-11 May) in Munich, has been withdrawn from the regatta after picking up a slight injury. He will be replaced by another Welshman, Tom Lucy, who steps up from one of the the men's pairs.

"Tom has picked up a minor problem so we're playing it safe on the medics advice and have withdrawn him from the Munich line-up", said GB Performance Director David Tanner today.

World Champions Unchanged, Newcomer in Four

Great Britain will go to the season's opening world cup, in Munich from May 8-11th, with its two world champion boats unchanged from the 2007 editions but with a newcomer to the men's four who were champions in 2005 and 2006.

For the Camelot-backed women's quadruple scull of Katherine Grainger, Frances Houghton, Debbie Flood and Annie Vernon Munich will provide a good early-year test but the season's long-term aim must be Beijing after three successive years for GB as world champions in this boat category.

Spare Time

For the GB squad training sometime feels as if it goes on 24/7. Well, not quite. So, when they manage to sneak some spare time what do they do? The answer is sometimes surprising.

While some perhaps sleep and eat and then return to training, others are following the traditional route of exercising their minds with PHDs and other further studies. And a few rowers are, of course, learning Mandarin this year for the impending trip to China. More recently, others have taken to more enterprising pursuits.
