World Class Start Programme

The aim of GB Rowing’s World Class Start Programme, sponsored by Siemens is to:

Identify and Develop Young Rowers with potential to win Olympic Medals

We are looking for young men and women who are:

Not currently rowing
or
Already rowing, but would like to see if they have what it takes

Individuals are tested and, if successful, recruited into World Class Start (WCS) centres (based in a club or university) where they are developed by a full time dedicated coach.

Individuals not near a WCS centre may be developed in their local club if there is suitable support and coaching available. A WCS coach then visits the club regularly to offer support and advice.

As a general rule, WCS Programme's recruitment age group is for openweight men 14 to 20 years old and for openweight women 14 - 22 years old.

Do you have what it takes?
We aren’t looking for ordinary people! We want BIG people with lots of raw talent!

How BIG?

The minimum heights:

Men
at least 178 cm (5’10”) at least 188 cm (6’2”)
14 - 22 years old 14 - 20 years old

Talent is tested using a researched, specific battery of tests that measure raw talent rather than trained performance. We measure potential and then compare this to successful rowers (including Olympic champions).

Many other qualities are needed to be a successful Olympian; we will train and discover these during a rower’s development.

Lightweights: Occasionally we may test exceptionally athletic people for lightweight rowing (the full Olympic team would contain 38 openweight rowers but only 6 lwt men and 2 lwt women). Lightweights are only tested when older than 18.
