Project Oarsome

The ARA-funded scheme to link schools with clubs is known as Project Oarsome. Over £3 million of rowing equipment has been provided to Clubmark-accredited clubs that have linked with at least two state secondary schools.

During the winter months coaches go into schools and deliver health and fitness activity based around the use of indoor rowing machines. In the summer, young people are invited to clubs to experience water-based activity in a friendly environment.

At the end of the summer young people are given the opportunity to join the club. This scheme has proved to be very successful since it was launched by Sir Steve Redgrave in 2000. The results of an evaluation can be found here.

There are two new initiatives:

  • Project Oarsome Xtra Youth for students aged 15 - 21 years (approx) in full time education.
  • Project Oarsome Xtra Recreation - providing rowing in more stable boats for all age groups.
