Playing for Success is an initiative funded jointly by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Local Authority and a Sports club, which in this case is Durham Amateur Rowing Club. It is aimed at children, providing an opportunity for them to study after school hours in a new, exciting and well equipped environment.

Make your nomination for BBC Sports 'Unsung Hero' award

The BBC is inviting nominations for the nation's Sports Unsung Hero.

'Now in its sixth year, the award is given to a volunteer who has made a difference to their community through sport.

Fifteen local winners are chosen by each BBC English region as well as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and will be invited to attend the Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on 14 December.

'Matt returns home with medal to a hero’s welcome'

Hexham's first-ever Olympic medallist Matthew Wells received a hero’s welcome when he returned this week to the place where he first began honing his talent.

Members of Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School Rowing Club decorated the clubhouse and gathered to congratulate their most successful old boy.

ARA Under -18 National Volunteer of the Year

Alex has been an outstanding volunteer at Tyne Rowing Club. Having just turned 18, he has shown exceptional dedication and maturity in his involvement with the club. He has volunteered his time to assist with coaching the beginner junior section at Tyne Rowing Club, in the process giving up his own rowing time with the Junior Squad and has made a significant impact on the way that new beginners to the sport are inducted and coached in the club.

'Berwick's boathouse was buzzing on Saturday for this year’s Round Table Trade Fours. it was touch and go whether the event would go ahead due to recent water conditions but in the end the weather was kind, luck was on our side and the day's racing got underway.

Lake Windemere Training Camp a great success

Well done to Chester-le-Street Amateur Rowing Club on a fantastic training camp at Lake Windemere between between Saturday 23rd and Thursday 28th August. Despite truly awful weather on many days (they have to say the rain is warm in Cumbria - there’s so much of it!), three outings a day were the norm for most athletes with senior and junior crews going out in an eight, coxed fours, a coxless quad and an assortment of pairs, doubles and single sculls.

Come along and watch players from Stockton Rugby Club compete in the Tees Rowing Club’s Primary and Adaptive Regatta on Saturday 9th August!

The rugby players have been taking to the Tees in order to maintain and improve their fitness levels for the gruelling rugby season ahead.
