Mark Cooke - problem solver and fund-raiser

Mark Cooke of Nottingham Rowing Club was the East Midlands nomination for the Volunteer of the Year Award 2008.

Since taking over the Nottingham Boat Club, Mark has restructured the Committee and changed the shape of Trentside forever by proposing the merger of four rowing clubs. This took considerable time in persuading people to make a new beginning and create a club that can offer everything from recreational rowing to Olympic pathway.

Rowing boom greets regatta

Burton Regatta gets under way tomorrow with rowing in the town in its best ever state, according to president and chairman Bob McDonald, writes MATT DAVIES.

His view comes despite a downturn in overall entries, even though the club which wins the most races will receive a £500 cash prize and the historic Burton Cask trophy.

The decline in entries will be balanced by the anticipated rivalry between Burton Leander and Trent Rowing Club, both of whom have reeled off a string of victories at regattas across the Midlands this summer.
