Henley Veteran Regatta

Nine former Olympians, including Sir Steven Redgrave, rowed with mixed fortunes in a Molesey composite eight at the 15th Henley Veteran Regatta held on the 11 and 12th July.

Racing in the Veteran B and C events the Molesey crew encountered formidable opposition, including a crew from the United States under the Crabtree BC/Kent Mitchell banner, boosted by the efforts of silver medal winners Ed Ives and Greg Springer, from the USA 1984 Olympic coxed four, and Guy Pooley, another former Great Britain Olympian who competed at both the Atlanta and Barcelona Olympics.

No one is really sure when it all started – the Wars of the Roses, the northern rowing challenge that is – not the 'bloody civil war' between the Plantagenets.

Last year there was a conversation among the members of the Bradford Amateur Rowing Club (BARC) Veteran crew on the way back from another cold winter head race about how novice veteran crews struggled to find genuine competition.

One of the oldest crews ever to compete in an event on the Thames will take to the water in the Abingdon Head of the River race on Sunday, writes Michael Knox.

Wallingford's super veteran crew, with an average age of nearly 76, will be rowing in Division 1 at 9.30am, a time when many men of their age will still be in bed.
