Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford opened a new chapter in the borough’s sporting history when he officially opened the newly refurbished Trafalgar Rowing Centre on Saturday 18th October 2008.

The Trafalgar Community Rowing Centre, close to the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, is home to clubmark-accredited Globe Rowing Club, established in 1923, and Curlew Rowing Club, started in 1866.

Paralympian rower Alastair Mckean is backing the BBC's Unsung Hero awards as the South East's regional ambassador. Alastair knows how important the contributions of unsung heroes can be - he credits his own unsung hero Andy Turner with making him the success he is today.

Alastair told South East Today: "I have known Andy since 1999, and he's never asked for anything. He always gives up his time for free. He never sings his own praises and that's refreshing. He just does it because he loves it, he'd never expect any recognition.

The BBC is inviting nominations for the nation's Sports Unsung Hero.

'Now in its sixth year, the award is given to a volunteer who has made a difference to their community through sport.

Fifteen local winners are chosen by each BBC English region as well as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and will be invited to attend the Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on 14 December.

ARA Volunteer of the Year Awards 2008

The ARA’s fourth annual Volunteer of the Year awards took place at the National Championships on Saturday 19th July 2008. As last year, separate awards were presented to recognise the work of young volunteers across the country. This category for Under 18s received a large number of nominations and has shown how many hard working young volunteers the sport is attracting.

Mark Cooke - problem solver and fund-raiser

Mark Cooke of Nottingham Rowing Club was the East Midlands nomination for the Volunteer of the Year Award 2008.

Since taking over the Nottingham Boat Club, Mark has restructured the Committee and changed the shape of Trentside forever by proposing the merger of four rowing clubs. This took considerable time in persuading people to make a new beginning and create a club that can offer everything from recreational rowing to Olympic pathway.

Jackie Wardell - Itchen Imperial's junior co-ordinator and mentor

Jackie Wardell has been junior coordinator at Itchen Imperial Rowing Club for the last four years and alongside organising the junior coaching sessions, coaches, crews, boats, safety and welfare of the juniors, she has organised the junior regatta held at Itchen Imperial rowing club at the end of the coastal rowing season.

Barry Wood - 'he is Bradford ARC' - Lifetime Achievement winner

Barry Wood is the Yorkshire Region's nomination for the Volunteer of the Year awards and was awarded the ARA Lifetime Achievement Award - a new category for 2008.

“Barry isn’t just a member of Bradford ARC - he is Bradford ARC.”

Barry joined Bradford ARC in 1957 and has been its faithful servant ever since. There is nothing Barry hasn’t done or wouldn’t do for the club. Not only has he represented Bradford ARC as a rower, but he has coxed, coached and umpired for the Club.
